Expect Europe’s Toughest Mudder, the third event in the Toughest Mudder series, to throw everything it’s got at you, including icy water, heavily forested, technical trails and Tough Mudder’s trademark thick mud. Toughest Mudder UK is slated to have the hardest five-miles of any course this year–don’t take those words lightly.
Held at Belvoir Castle, a castle now owned by the Duke & Dutchess of Rutland, Europe’s Toughest Mudder is likely to be the prettiest course you'll ever experience. The castle you’ll see on site was built in the early 1800’s with expansive grounds with large grassy fields, rolling hills, and fresh English air. That doesn’t mean this course is a walk in the park. Top contenders will race to claim the most miles. Here’s who to watch and what to expect on course – although anything (and anyone) can happen.
Women’s Athlete Preview
Sara Knight, who placed second at Toughest Mudder West and fifth at Toughest Mudder South, is slated to win Toughest Mudder U.K. “The U.K. race is the one I’m most excited for,” says Knight. “I am hoping for the win but am excited to see the caliber of athletes in the U.K.” Knight hopes to get in her highest mileage yet here, which would need to top 35 miles.
Susanne Kraus who did 80 miles at World's Toughest Mudder last year and took out second place will be taking on her first Toughest Mudder of the season.
Men’s Athlete Preview
Jon Albon, the duo behind the Atkins-Albon team at World’s Toughest Mudder 2016, is confirmed at Toughest Mudder U.K. this weekend. Look for him to take a top spot at this event.
German contender Felix Baiker, 2 time World's Toughest Mudder contender is back in 2017 and will be making a strong push for top spot.
Notable UK Entrants
UK Tough Mudder veteran and the first man to conquer 50 UK events, Chris James, is set to take on Toughest this weekend after debuting at World’s Toughest Mudder last November. Making his first foray into participating in endurance events is event day regular and WTM Pit Crew extraordinaire Guy Richardson. Joining Chris and Guy will be one of the most prolific UK female Mudders, Sonya Goodwin, who will also be taking on her first competitive endurance event.
5-Mile Loop: 12 a.m. – 8 a.m.
Whereas the previous Toughest Mudders have featured two distinct loops, Toughest Mudder U.K. will be run on one course with 20 obstacles; look for this race to be a fast one.
This single circuit will have between 15 & 16 obstacles open throughout the night with certain obstacles set to open at different times during the race. The course will feature Midlands trademark sticky mud, plenty of water and an average elevation of 285 ft.
