What did I expect? Being honest I expected the experience to be similar to a scene from a war film of my friends and I trying to survive for dear life and possibly breaking a bone or two.

However, it was absolutely nothing like that. In fact, it was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things I’ve ever taken part in and here’s why:

  1. You feel UNSTOPPABLE and basically like superwoman.

As you can probably guess, I was very nervous before hand as I definitely wasn’t the fittest. To calm myself down, I decided to tell myself I would only do the obstacles that looked very safe and somewhat doable.

But from beginning to end of the course, I was continuously very pleasantly surprised. Yes, there were several obstacles that were harder than others, i.e. Everest, but on encountering each one, there was always a crowd of other Mudders there to pull you through and support you. After completing one obstacle after another, my confidence grew and grew.

When you’re submerged into ice cold water at speed and forced to swim under it and THEN run another 5 miles – so after it, you feel untouchable.

  1. Think you can’t become closer with your friends? You can at Tough Mudder.

My friends are very supportive girls, but we all agreed that if you can shove and kick your friends’ bums, armpits and anywhere possible over a ramp into a pool of muddy water, they will always be your friends.

Also, we stuck together and had the chats and took it at our own pace. So, there was no pressure – just four women covered in mud, powering through and thinking of all the food we deserved to have after that night.

  1. Fellow Tough Mudders are guardian angels.

It’s not every day a stranger will push you over ramps and tyres, pull you though mud baths and cheer you on. Every person there helped another person in some way and this was definitely one of my favourite aspects of Tough Mudder. There were no phones, no music, no distractions, just hundreds of people being very, very sound.

After my first Tough Mudder, I think it’s something everyone should do at least once – hopefully it was the first of many for me!
